$2M Allocated For Madison Affordable Housing Development
The House Appropriations Committee will fund fourteen community projects in 2023, one of which will be in Madison.
MADISON, NJ — Representative Mikie Sherrill (NJ-11) announced that 14 community projects she submitted to the House Appropriations Committee are moving forward for funding in this year's budget.
One of the 14 projects, Madison Borough of Affordable Housing Development, will receive $2,086,269.
"The projects include infrastructure investments to improve water quality and mitigate flood risks, healthcare facility upgrades, programs to address the affordability of housing and college tuition, public health support, and funding for law enforcement," Sherrill said.

The funds would be used to build 44 rental apartments in Madison for low and middle-income families on two adjacent sites. The project will include enhanced energy initiatives such as dedicated solar panels for each unit, triple-glazed windows, heat pumps, extra insulation, a specialized energy-efficient appliance package, and other features, Sherrill said.
All of these elements will contribute to the housing project being certified as New Jersey's first multi-family affordable housing development to meet Passive Housing/New Zero Energy Standards.

Six of the units will be reserved for people with special needs and homeless families.
The project sites, according to Sherrill, are within walking distance of necessary community resources such as educational facilities, recreation areas, public transportation, grocery stores, and the commercial district.
"All of these local projects address pressing needs raised by communities without burdening local taxpayers. I am ready to do all I can to secure this funding as this bill moves through the House and Senate,” Sherrill said.
A separate affordable housing expansion at 286-294 Main Street was recently approved by the Madison Planning Board. The Madison Mall Apartments development plans to add 40 residential units to the 64 existing units, with at least ten of those units designated as affordable housing.

“Thank you to all the local organizations and government leaders who submitted projects on behalf of your communities. NJ-11 is lucky to have so many strong advocates fighting for it,” Sherrill said.
