MADISON, NJ — Backpacks, pencils, classrooms and early alarms are about to make their return in Madison as students return to classes.

Madison Public Schools students begin the 2026-27 school year Wednesday, Sept. 2, with a single-session day. Students will also have an early dismissal Thursday before schools close Friday and Monday for Labor Day, giving students a four-day weekend just two days after the new school year begins.

Before the first bell rings, several schools are giving families a chance to ease into the new year.

Central Avenue School will hold an orientation for new families this Tuesday, followed by kindergarten tours. Families can also attend a meet-and-greet next Tuesday to meet teachers, see classrooms and get familiar with opening-day routines.

Madison High School will welcome ninth-graders and new students for orientation Thursday. At Madison Junior School, new students can tour the building Friday.

Families may want to double-check transportation arrangements, schedules and opening-day instructions before students leave home and prepare for additional school day traffic.
