Recognizing that literacy is part of survival in today’s world, once again as part of the NEA’s “Read Across America” campaign, the Rotarians from the Rotary Club of Madison spent time promoting literacy to second graders in the Madison elementary schools by reading an age-appropriate story entitled “Andy and Elmer’s Apple Dumpling Adventure.”
The book was written by a member of the Rotary Club of Fairborn, Ohio, and is the story of a young entrepreneur who learns about the Rotary’s Four-Way Test as he seeks to start a business. The Rotary’s Four-Way Test guides actions by way of answers to the following questions: Is it the TRUTH? Is it FAIR to all Concerned? Will it BUILD GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS? Will it Be BENEFICIAL to all Concerned? The book focuses on ethical behavior and literacy in an appealing way to young children.
Following the reading, almost 300 second graders in Madison received a bookmark and a crossword puzzle exercise serving as a memento of the book and program.
