'The Bengali' Documentary Comes To Summit Film Society June 6

Harvard's Henry Louis Gates Jr. praised the film for exploring South Asian and African-American cultural history.

MADISON, NJ — The Film Society of Summit will screen "The Bengali," a documentary exploring South Asian and African-American cultural heritage, on Saturday, June 6, with a discussion featuring director Kavery Kaul to follow.

The film follows a Louisiana writer who travels to a remote part of India — where no American has previously ventured — in search of her grandfather's descendants, the land he claimed to own, and the truth behind the family stories she grew up hearing.

The film examines questions of mixed heritage, immigration and identity along the way.
