I try to be responsible when feeding my 9-year-old girl. But let's face it, sometimes I need to take some short cuts. Since she is a pretty active kid (soccer, softball, and basketball) I look the other way on an occasional Happy Meal. I really don't want to know where the chicken comes from, believe me. But is it any different than a chicken fingers/fries meal from one of Madison's eateries? Who knows? And who cares?
For years now, I have thought it was great that my daughter opted for apples, not fries, when placing her order at McDonalds. Last week, when time constraints prevented me from making duck confit, I found myself at one of their drive-thru windows. "Six-piece kids meal, please. And can I have apples instead of fries, please?" "Sir, we include apples and fries in all our kids meals now," the teen worker informed me.
Hmm. Why?, I wondered to myself. She says she does not want them. I know she isn't going to eat them. Then I will be stuck with them and I hate waste. Just like that I am shoveling them in like the crackhead I am. It's hard enough to get in the drive-thru and NOT order a meal for myself. Now I have to deal with unwanted and unneeded fries!!! Worse, the little one in the backseat started chowing down on them. All these years she avoided fries and all things potato. Unfortunately, she is a tightwad like her father. She sees the fries as a "free" treat. And now the hooks are in. Perhaps another crackhead is born?

I ain't buying in. Let me be the one over-indulging and ruining my daughter with unhealthy food choices. When I say apples, I mean apples. Do we really need fries thrown upon us? We eliminate gym glasses. Our kids are more and more sedentary and gaming experts. Enough is enough. Eliminate the blasted toys that come with these meals and stop pushing unhealthy options when they are not required. We can be fit again, one fry at a time (refused, of course.)
