As the leaves (read: trees) continue to fall this glorious autumn it provides some time to reflect.
Is 5 inches of October snow enough to cripple a community or a State? If you are reading this, congratulations. There are still several folks left in the dark by either abject failures or blatant neglect on the part of underperforming utility companies.
That is not to say those folks employed by, for instance PSE&G or JCP&L, are not decent and hard-working folks. Problem is there are either 1) not enough of them 2) not enough trained properly 3) beholden to certain politicians, towns, jurisdictions and/or special interests or 4) all of the above.

Idyllic Madison lost power sometime around 4 p.m. Saturday. All indications are the proper crew did not arrive to assess the situation until 11 a.m. Monday. We all love our weekends don't we.
It can be argued we are far too reliant on our devices. Overcrowded gyms and coffee shops filled with folks charging up and working would certainly attest. It was rather nice to be in the black at 8 p.m. ... with candles burning ... and sound, camp-like sleep, no? For a few hours.

Our antiquated system just doesn't hold up these days. Our work ethic does not help much either. NJ Transit flag men are required to assist us when the trains are not working? Is there really a PR department that issued this statement?
It is now more understandable why lots lie vacant for years and years. How can we possibly focus on such seemingly small things when it takes most of our concentration keeping the power on.
We can all agree that Madison, NJ is a tremendous place to live. Most of us might even say New Jersey has its charm.
Wondering if I am alone in thinking we STILL deserve better?
And that doesn't mean volunteering hundreds of hours each week ... or attending countless council meetings ... or demeaning each other in the comments section.
The first step is acknowledging there are problems.
My guess is those folks not able to read this right now might be on board. Now, what to do about it?
