"THE SHORT, HAPPY LIFE OF AMABEL SCHARFF ROBERTS. THE FIRST AMERICAN NURSE AND MADISON NATIVE, TO DIE IN WORLD WAR I."
In June 1917, Madison resident and Army nurse, Amabel Scharff Roberts, arrived in France. Americans back home thirsted for war news, and the Madison Eagle quenched that thirst by printing excerpts from Amabel’s letters home which were deeply touched by Madison residents. The first native of Madison to ship off to war, she was tragically also the town’s first casualty to mourn. This is her story as told by her grand-nephew.
