Pianist and scholar Jeanne Golan will present a special lecture and piano performance exploring the life, music compositions, and legacy of Viktor Ullmann (1898–1944). Ullmann was a leading composer of his generation. Interned by the Nazis at the Terezin Concentration Camp, the “model” camp designed to fool the Allied Forces into believing the imprisoned were leading normal lives, he was later exterminated at Auschwitz. He described his determination to keep composing in Terezin with this quote: ‘Goethe’s maxim, “Live within the moment, live in eternity,” revealed to me the enigmatic meaning of art… by no means did we sit weeping on the banks of the waters of Babylon, and our endeavor with respect to Arts was commensurate with our will to live.’ This program is free and open to the public. The New York Times describes pianist Jeanne Golan as being “technically polished and superbly expressive,” and the Philadelphia Inquirer as having the “gift and ability to clarify the core of music.” Her programming reflects her active involvement in fostering works by new composers and in discovering relatively unknown musical treasures, with a leaning toward Holocaust-afflicted composers. She has several albums released under the Steinway and Sons label. Ms. Golan has been featured at such venues as Carnegie Hall and the Ravinia Music Festival. Having earned degrees from Yale and Eastman, she serves as a professor at SUNY/Nassau and as an Artist/Scholar-in-Residence at DOROT and Holocaust Music Lost & Found.
