COMFORCARE HOME CARE TO SCREEN "ALIVE INSIDE" FREE SEPTEMBER 30

AWARD WINNING DOCUMENTARY ILLUSTRATES THE POWER OF MUSIC ON THE MIND

On Wednesday, September 30, ComForCare Home Care of Mountainside will host a free screening of “Alive Inside: A story of Music and Memory”, an award-winning documentary on the revitalizing power of music on the mind. Held at Summit Public Library, located at 75 Maple St, Summit, this documentary illustrates how music can transform individuals with dementia and was the winner of the 2014 Sundance Film Festival Audience Award. This screening is presented by Gary and Elaine Raymond, owners of ComForCare Home Care of Mountainside.

This screening of “Alive Inside” highlights ComForCare Home Care’s DementiaWise initiative, which focuses on training caregivers in the use of meaningful activities, such as a patient’s favorite music. This event will run from 5 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. A screening of the short film, ComForCare presents the “Power of Music” will directly follow the film. Following the short film, Steve Toll, director of therapeutic music for ComForCare Home Care, will answer audience questions about the power of music. Those interested in attending the screening can register by visiting joyfulmemories.com.

“Alive Inside” showcases experts in the fields of neuroscience and therapeutic music discussing the impact music has on the brain, which the Alzheimer’s Association says can have a multitude of positive benefits. “We have been providing care to patients with dementia for over 9 years now and have worked to educate not only our caregivers but the families of patients as well,” said Gary. “This screening of Alive Inside is the perfect opportunity to showcase what profound effect music can have on even the most advanced cases of dementia or Alzheimer’s”

For Toll, who spent almost two decades using music to inspire, motivate and lift the spirits of seniors, “Alive Inside” is the perfect starting point for caregivers to witness the power of music.

“I haven’t heard one person who has seen ‘Alive Inside’ and hasn’t come away utterly inspired,” said Toll. “Even seniors who have been seemingly unresponsive for years come alive while listening to songs from when they were young. With ComForCare’s DementiaWise program, which uses meaningful, effective activities like listening to nostalgic music to promote engagement, we continue following the same principles around which ‘Alive Inside’ was based. Our program allows our caregivers to provide the seniors we care for the same music they once loved, bringing back memories, emotions and vitality as a result.”
