Contractor's Torch Ignites Coldwell Banker's Roof In Madison

First responders cut a hole in the roof to fight the blaze, officials said.

MADISON, NJ - High winds and torch work on the roof of Coldwell Bankers led to a fire that shut down Main Street for a short time Monday afternoon.

According to authorities, around 11 a.m. the Madison Fire Department was dispatched to 49 Main Street due to reports of smoke in the building. Upon arrival and investigation, the Madison Fire Department discovered a contractor repairing the roof of Coldwell Bankers had set fire to the roof while they were using a torch, officials said.

A second alarm was dispatched bringing additional help from Florham Park, Cedar Knolls, Morris Township and Chatham Fire Departments along with Madison Volunteer Ambulance Corp.

Firefighters had to cut open the roof, as well as remove ceiling tiles on the floor below to extinguish the fire. Also responding to the scene was Madison Police Department, Water Department and Department of Public Works.

All businesses are open and no injuries were reported, officials said.

Main Street was reopened in both directions by 12:30 p.m.
