Democracy Activist to Speak at Drew University November 14

The End of Midterm Elections Is Not the End of Our Work as Citizens

Democracy activist Sam Daley-Harris will speak at Drew University on Wednesday, November 14 at 6:00 p.m. in BC 120. In a speech titled “Are Silence and Shouting Our Only Two Options: Bringing Bipartisanship and Transformation to Citizen Activism,” Daley-Harris will emphasize that the end of mid-term elections is not the end of our work as citizens.

Daley-Harris heads Civic Courage which has coached national non-profit organizations with active groups in this part of New Jersey: Citizens Climate Lobby works to reverse climate change, RESULTS works to end poverty, FCNL works to prevent nuclear war with North Korea, and American Promise works to get money out of politics.

“My methodology is not focused on resistance, as important as those strategies can be,” he said. “The work of Civic Courage is focused on launching and sustaining strong local chapters that can build respectful, trusted relationships with elected officials and other community leaders—a politics of love.”

Daley-Harris will tell how Citizens’ Climate Lobby’s volunteers have enrolled 45 Republicans and 45 Democrats in joining the House Climate Solutions Caucus and speak of RESULTS volunteer’s success in having 162 House Republicans and Democrats sign a letter to top appropriators urging them to reject the President’s call for a 31% cut to the Global Fund the Fight AIDS, TB and Malaria.

“The Global Fund and its partners have saved 27 million lives in the last 16 years," Daley-Harris said. "Most of us don’t know about this kind of bipartisan work fueled by citizen action and that leaves us believing we can’t make a difference and that Congress can’t ever work together to get something done. My presentation is one of hope,” he said, “and will offer the Drew community ways to come off the sidelines and onto the playing field of civic engagement.”
