Dodgers Field Hockey Stops Boonton While Rain Stops Game

In its second game of the season, the Madison High School girls field hockey team rebounded from its opening day loss, as it stopped Boonton, 2-0, in a rain-shortened game on Monday afternoon in Madison. 

Senior captains Allison Helwig and Mackenzie Ellis made sure that 2009 state champion Dodgers wouldn't drop two games in a row, as each pitched in with a goal to carry the team to victory.

Defensively the Dodgers looked stout, stopping Boonton every time the Bombers approached the Madison goal and consistently forcing turnovers in the middle of the field.

Unlike in its previous game against the Peddie School, Madison showed a better ability to work as a unit in this contest as it seemed to have a better handle on moving the ball up and down the field consistently.

After Madison's loss to Peddie, head coach Ann Marie Davies remarked that the team was "not used to being behind" early in games.

Helwig made sure that the team didn't have to deal with coming from behind in this one as her first half goal sent the Dodgers up, 1-0.

Helwig's goal, a shot from just inside the 20-yard line, was her team-leading third of the season.

Ellis would get in on the scoring as well, her first goal of the season, coming five minutes into the second half.

The Dodgers controlled possession for much of the game, showing quality passing, and never really allowing Boonton a chance to get on the board.

But with ten minutes remaining in the game and dark clouds covering the sky above Ted Monica Field, officials were forced to send both squads into the Madison High School gymnasium to avoid lightning.

The officials would call the game minutes later, as Madison walked away with its first win of the season.

The Dodgers will look to win their second game of the season on Wednesday at 4 p.m. in Parsippany.
