Body Mechanics of the Hand and Arms

A Two Week Series Taught by Vince Fratello

How many times has your teacher told you to work from the base?  For inverted poses the base likewise inverts from the lower limbs to the upper ones (the base is, of course, shared in four limbed poses).  Even in standing poses, work in the arms and hands is critical to the pose.  In modern life many of us have repetitive stress issues in our forearms and wrists that need to be addressed preventively and therapeutically.  Issues include tennis elbow and carpal tunnel syndrome.  Lack of flexibility in the wrists is often a limiting factor in handstand.  A carrying angle in the elbow with show up in a variety of yoga poses.  We will examine gross and subtle actions in the hands, wrists and arms to improve their work and health and make the pose as a whole better.

In the Body Mechanics approach, we will examine work in the hands, wrists and arms that will make our poses not just better, but ultimately also easier.  Each week will build on and reinforce the previous work, but will also be designed to stand alone for drop-ins.  The classes will be taught to offer work at multiple levels and will be helpful in both practice and teaching.  Weekly handouts will help with the retention of the concepts presented.
