Exhibition at St. Elizabeth Highlights Nexus of Science and Art

Showing opens today in Morristown.

is hosting The Abstract Universe:Microcosm/Macrocosm, a multi-disciplinary program examining the relationship between art and science.

The showing opens with an artists' reception  at the Therese A. Maloney Art Gallery, in Annunciation Center on campus, 2 Convent Rd., Morristown today from 4:30-7 p.m.

The exhibition, funded in part by the National Endowment for the Arts, reveals how astronomy, biology, chemistry, physics, and other scientific fields inspired contemporary artists when they created their abstract paintings, sculptures, photographs, prints, mixed media pieces, musical works, digital films, and animation sequences, the school said in a release. In addition, the exhibition presents works from the scientific community that are, in turn, inspired by art and artistic techniques. The exhibition closes April 15.

At 7:15 p.m., immediately following the January 23 opening, a film presentation and a panel discussion takes place in Dolan Performance Hall, also in Annunciation Center. The presentation and discussion highlights award-winning Toronto filmmaker Kevin Sullivan and his new documentary, Out of the Shadows, which reveals how a Rembrandt painting was uncovered and authenticated through the use of advanced scientific technology. After the film, Virginia Fabbri Butera, Ph.D., Director of the Maloney Art Gallery, interviews  Sullivan and three other artists in the exhibition, about their fascination with, and merging of, science and their art forms.

These events are free and open to the public.
