Fire Destroys Historic Madison Building

Over 75 firefighters responded but thankfully, no one was hurt.

MADISON, NJ— A Sunday afternoon fire ripped through a Madison building, destroying two stores and two floors of residential apartments.

Firefighters responded to 47-49 Main Street just before 5 p.m. on Sunday, and saw smoke coming from the third floor. There was "heavy fire" in those apartments. There were no injuries.

It took about 70 minutes to get the fire under control, Madison officials said. Fire crews and police remained on scene until 11:29 p.m. investigating, The cause is still under investigation.

Water, gas, and electric were all shut off to the building, and extensive fire and water damage has made the building unsafe to live in until repairs have been made.

About 75 firefighters responded from a multitude of companies: Florham Park, Chatham, Morris Township, Cedar Knolls, Morristown, New Vernon, Morris Plains, Chatham Township, Whippany, Green Village, East Hanover, Summit and Morris County all provided assistance.
