Flags Will Be Flown At Half Staff In Madison

MADISON, NJ — As per Presidential Proclamation, the Borough of Madison will be lowering flags throughout Madison to half-staff in honor of Queen Elizabeth II until sunset on the day of her interment.

The President's order was effective throughout the United States, its territories, and possessions, as well as on US Navy ships.

President Biden said in his edict that it was a "mark of respect" to "a stateswoman of unmatched dignity and constancy who deepened the bedrock alliance between the United Kingdom and the United States."

"In New Jersey, her reign coincided with the strengthening of economic and social ties with the United Kingdom. And for the many British citizens living in New Jersey, she remained a singular point of connection with their native soil. New Jersey joins the international outpouring of sympathy for our friends across the United Kingdom who mourn her passing. What a tremendous life she lived,” NJ Governor Phil Murphy said.

Governor Murphy has also directed that flags be flown at half-staff from Friday, Sept. 9 to Monday, Sept. 12 in remembrance of the nearly 3,000 innocent people killed in the 2001 terrorist attacks, nearly 700 of whom were New Jersey residents.

"On the anniversary of September 11th, we mourn the nearly 3,000 lives taken from us and honor the bravery of the many heroes who risked their lives that day," Governor Murphy said. "As we come together in remembrance, we will continue to be guided by the strength that has led our nation over the last 21 years."
