Free Viewing Followed By A Moderated Discussion of Movie Ruby Bridges
The AAUW Madison Area Branch and the League of Women Voters Morristown Area are co-sponsoring this free event.
In recognition of Martin Luther King Jr. Day on January 15th, the AAUW Madison Area Branch and the League of Women Voters Morristown Area are co-hosting a screening of the film, Ruby Bridges (rated TV PG-L). Immediately following the presentation, a discussion will be moderated by League of Morristown Area members, Dr. Cynthia Samuel and Judy Woop. The event is being held at the Madison Community Arts Center located at 10 Kings Road in Madison. The program starts at 1PM. It is free and open to the public. Advanced reservations are not needed.
This film presents the real-life tale of young Ruby Bridges one of the first African-American children to attend an integrated school in the Deep South. At only age 6, Ruby is selected to attend an all-white school in New Orleans, causing an uproar in the racially divided region. Ruby’s strength and dignity as well as the support she received from her parents and others are depicted in the movie. Her family’s heroic struggle for a better education helped changed history.
The League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan, grassroots civic organization working to protect and expand voting rights and ensure everyone is represented in our democracy.
