Friends of the Madison Public Library receive Library Association Award

Friends of the Madison Public Library Receive New Jersey Library Association (NJLA) award - presented at Borough Council meeting – May 22, 2017
MADISON – The New Jersey Library Association (NJLA) presented the Friends of the Madison Public Library with a service award at the association’s annual convention held in Atlantic City on April 25. Emily Weisenstein, Head of the Children’s Department of the Madison Public Library, accepted the award on behalf of the Friends. The award recognizes the Friends for improving library services through sustained contributions and for promoting the use of the library and its services to the public.
Mayor Robert Conley announced the award at the May 22 borough council meeting. He then introduced Lynn Favreau, the new Director of the Madison Public Library and its former director, Nancy Adamczyk, and Emily Weisenstein, Head of the Children’s Department.

Weisenstein said that she is so grateful for the contributions that the Friends have made to the library because they have enabled her to carry out all of the many programs her department holds for Madison’s children. Favreau said that she looks forward to working with the Friends and serving the Madison community as its new director. She also complimented Adamczyk for her lasting legacy.
Friends Chairwoman, Sylvia Luber, stated, “It is an honor and privilege for the Friends of the Madison Public Library to accept this award, and we thank Emily for nominating us. We also thank the many members of the Madison community who have generously supported all of our fundraisers. We cannot do this without them.”

The Board of the Friends consists of 11 members who, with the support of the community, raise approximately $40,000 every year for library programs and services and for the purchase of books and other media for adults and children. Recent additional contributions include $24,000 for the construction of the new Children’s Picture Book Room and $6,000 for an upgrade of the library’s public Wi-Fi system. The Friends also fund the Library’s Museum Pass Program that offers free passes to 15 local and NYC museums.
The main sources of Friends’ revenue include fundraisers like the biennial Touch a Truck event, the Annual Appeal, the Friends’ Spring Gala and the Drew Minicourse Adult Education Program, co-sponsored with Drew University.
