Girls Tennis Rolls Over Parsippany

Dodgers win all five matches in win.

The Madison High School girls tennis squad dominated Parsippany on Wednesday afternoon, winning all five of its matchups in Madison.

The most dominant performance of the day belonged to Madison's third singles player, senior Vendela Larsson. Larsson, who dropped her last match on Tuesday, looked great as she went on to win 6-2, 6-0.

"I think I played a lot better today than I have some other days this season," Larsson said. "I was disappointed with my game yesterday and I think it made me work harder today."

Madison head coach John Delloiacono was impressed by the senior, particularly with her footwork and her ability to regroup after Tuesday's match.

"She was moving very well today, moving towards the ball," he said. "She decided that she was going to be a little more aggressive with her footwork and her strokes and that put her in command throughout the match."

Madison's second singles senior Julianna Vezza also played well, frustrating her opponent all match with pinpoint placement and powerful serves. Vezza made fairly quick work of her opponent, winning the match in two sets, 6-3, 7-5.

"It was a good match. The first set was a little better, just because I had a bigger lead, but I fought back in the second set, which is good," Vezza said. "We're really playing well as a team and our record shows that."

Emily Rutland, who controls Madison's first singles spot, found herself in a tight match as her first set was forced into a tiebreaker. Rutland won the tiebreaker 7-4, before winning her second set 6-3.

Both Rutland and Delloiacono were pleased with her ability to fight for points and find a win.

"Whenever you play first singles in high school, you never get an easy match. Every single match is hard," Delloiacono said. "Today was a good win because she fought through against a competitive opponent and even if she had not prevailed in the match, the fact that she worked so hard is a real positive."

"I think we played really well today," Rutland said. "Today was one of my better matches. I felt more comfortable and I'm happy with how I played."

Madison also won each of its doubles matches against Parsippany on Wednesday.

Senior Dana Ranney and freshman Jessica Driscoll, Madison's first doubles team, stopped their opponents 7-5, 6-3 while second doubles, Kate Kim and Ivy Schuckman rolled 6-1, 6-1.

Delloiacono was pleased with his team's showing, focusing on the team's ability to improve.

"As long as we continue to improve every match out, I'll be content," he said. "The matches were close, but our kids did a good job."
