Annual bicycle event raises money, awareness of officers who have died in the line of duty.

The annual Police Unity Tour got rolling Monday morning on its way to New York City and Washington, D.C.

Law enforcement officers from as far as California and Texas assembled at the Ramada in East Hanover for the bicycle tour's early-morning start. The tour headed through Florham Park and Madison on the way to Jersey City and later, the World Trade Center, before turning south for a ceremony Thursday in the nation's capitol.

Several borough police officers participated in the event.

The Tour was founded in 1997 by Florham Park Police Chief (then Officer) Patrick Montuore and helps to raise money for the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington. Last year, nearly 1,300 cyclists raised more than $1.3 million for the memorial.
