Madison Girls Lacrosse falls to Summit

The Dodgers played hard, but lost 6-5 in the final moments of the game against the Summit Hilltoppers.

The Madison High School girls lacrosse team played tough, but it was not tough enough against Summit in Monday's game at Summit High School. The Hilltopers pulled out a narrow win in the last few minutes of the second half,  6-5.

"I thought we did a nice job keeping the score low," said Madison coach Carole Rawding. "But their defense was tough and we had a hard time executing our attack."

The Summit defense let up only one goal to the Dodgers in the first half while the Hilltoppers' attack racked up four goals. Despite the early lead, Madison goalie Shannon Sweeney made a strong showing, making 14 saves and stopping all loose balls.

"Shannon did a great job," Rawding said. "She really controlled the tempo of the defense out there. She wasn't too proud of her game against Kent Place and she said today she was going to play her best and she did it. I'm so proud."

Evan Foulsham also had a strong showing, scoring two goals for the Dodgers. Ali Foulsham and Kathleen Matthews had two assists each.

In the second half, the Dodgers picked up the pace and tied up the score. However, Summit's Kelly Osmulski scored the tie-breaking goal with 2 minutes, 30 seconds left on the clock. From that point on, The Hilltoppers stalled and the Dodgers struggled to gain possession.

"We're happy with the goal differential but we're overall very disappointed," Rawding said. "We were hoping for a win but we had too many turnovers against a tough team. They stalled in the end and stalls are very hard to break. But that's girls' lacrosse."

The Dodgers face off against the undefeated Chatham Cougars on Thursday. The Cougars recently defeated Oak Knoll, 15-11. The game is set for 4:30 at Chatham High School.

"It's a tough conference and with the teams we're facing next, we really have to ramp it up," said Rawding.
