Alan Siegel will talk about twenty-eight of the deadliest natural and human caused calamities to strike New Jersey between 1821 and 1906, ranging from horrific transportation accidents to uncontrolled fires of a kind rarely seen today. Disasters bring out the worst as well as the best in people. Siegel will focus on the bravest individuals, including harbor pilot Thomas Freeborn who drowned while attempting to save fifty passengers and crew, and Warwicke Greene, a fourteen-year-old schoolboy who rescued the injured after a train wreck in the Hackensack Meadows.

The Madison Historical Society’s role is to assemble, record, and preserve all matters of historical interest concerning Madison and its residents. Formed in 1922 to preserve the old Bottle Hill Tavern, the Society has organized a significant collection of historic documents, maps and photographs over the intervening years. These are housed at the Local History Center at the Madison Public Library.
