MADISON, NJ - Vincent Hynes was 19-years-old when he landed on the beaches of Normandy at the height of World War II. As a diver in the Navy, his primary job was to recover the victims in the water.

Seventy-five years later, he received the Mayors Hero Award last night for his heroic effort.

Hynes was one of the 156,000 troops who landed on the beaches in Normandy on D-Day and last week, Hynes was one of five to receive a medal from the French Government. The award bestowed upon them membership in the French Legion of Honor from a grateful country and a grateful continent for their efforts on D-Day and the days and months to follow.
