Madison Mariners Swimteam Competes at the 2018 Autumn Challenge

Impressive performance for Mariners athletes at the Autumn Challenge

The Madison YMCA Mariners swim team excelled at their first large invitational swim meet November 16th – 18th. Thirteen teams competed at the 2018 Autumn Challenge in Perth Amboy, NJ. Impressive results were posted by all Mariners’ age groups.

Leading the way for the 10&Under Girls, Julia Jadro (8) finished 1st in the 50 and 100 Yard Breast, 2nd in the 50 Back, 50 Fly and 200 Free. She also earned 4th place in the 50 Free. Samantha Wagner (8) raced to 2nd place in the 50 free and 4th in the 50 Fly. Ellie Mulligan (8), Samantha Soltis (10) and Josie Speace (9) all earned Top 20 finishes in their events. The 10&U 200 Free relay comprised of Jadro, Speace, Soltis and Anya Rodrigo Candappa, posted a 6th place finish.

Mary Gillen (12) excelled over the weekend paving the way for the 11-12 Girls’ success. Mary posted four Top 5 finishes in the 100 and 200 Yard Fly, 100 and 200 IM and finished 6th in the 400 IM. She also earned a Top 20 finish in the 100 Free. Sadie Clarke (11) earned 9th and 10th in the 50 Back and Free events with two other Top 20 races. Katelyn Hoffelder (12) also had two Top 10 finishes in the 50 and 200 Free events as well as 19th in the 100 Free. The Mariners’ bench strength also posted impressive results. Collectively, Elena Latorre (12), Alyssa Lee (12), Grace Mulligan (11), Molly Newman (11) and Ryan Sprague (12) added over 15 Top 20 finishes to the team’s performance.

The 11-12 Girls 200 Free and Medley relays continued to dominate the pool with 4 Top 10 finishes. In the 200 Free Relay, Hoffelder, Newman, Sprague and Gillen placed 3rd while Latorre, Anjali Phadnis, Riley Snarr and Anika Lippke placed 8th. In the 200 Medley Relays, Latorre, Sprague, Gillen and Hoffelder placed 4th and Caviness, Clark, Lippke and Newman placed 9th.

Distance swimmer Kaley Snarr (16) capped her weekend with Top 10 finishes in all 5 of her events. 1st in the 200 Yard Free, 3rd in both the 500 and 1650 Free events, as well as 9th place in both the 50 Free and 200 IM. Alison Barton (13), Katie Caviness (16) and Hannah Corcoran (17) all posted Top 20 finishes in the 13 and Over Girls Division.

Sean Clark (10) and Tirian Chang (10) raced to top honors in the 10&U Boys division. Clark (10) topped the results with a 1st place finish in the 100 Yard Back while posting four 3rd place finishes in the 50 and 500 Free, the 200 IM and the 100 Breast. He also finished 6th in the 100 IM. Chang also had an excellent performance racing to two 2nd place finishes in the 50 Yard Back and the 100 IM. He also placed 5th in the 100 Breast while posting two 6th place finishes in the 50 and 200 Free events. Trevor Ledon and Ethan Wagner (both 10) also posted an additional 7 Top 20 finishes for the Mariners. Clark, Ledon, Wagner and Chang also posted 1st and 2nd places in the 200 Medley and Free Relays.

The 200 Medley and Free Relays were the sweet spot for the 11-12 Boys. Owen Smith, Anuthra Abeysinghe, Aryan Kumar and Dan Posy finished 5th in the 200 Medley Relay while Kumar, Ransom Chang, Yannick Rodrigo Candappa and Abeysinghe finished 7th in the 200 Free Relay. Over the three day meet, Abeysinghe (11), Chang (12), Posy (12), Rodrigo Candappa (11) and Smith (11) each posted Top 20 finishes in their individual events.

Finally, three Mariners dominated the 13&Over Boys events. Kyle Beebe (14) had two 1st place finishes in the 50 and 100 Yard Free, 2nd in the 500 Free and placed 3rd in the 100 Back. Atticus Chang (14) excelled in the 100 and 200 Breast, earning 1st and 3rd, respectively, while rounding out his weekend with finishes of 2nd and 7th in the 100 and 500 Free and 4th in the 400 IM. Collin Faraher (13), who excels in Free events, placed 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th in the 200, 50, 500 and 100 Yard Free. He also placed 8th in the 100 Breast. Additional swimmers also placed in the Top 20 during the course of the meet: Artha Abeysinghe (14), Will Foucher (13), Brendan Fowler (18), Chris Houng (14), Aiden Kagan (15), James Lord (15), Terry Luongo (15), Philip Puccio (16), Ryan Snarr (13) and Owen Weller (13).

Team members who also posted strong performances throughout Autumn Challenge: Neel Ahuja, Annie Alden, Casey Clark, Caroline Cortese, Nate Creamer, Dylan DeCicco, Maura Feron, Annabelle Houng, Emily Houng, Sophie Huang, Ty Ikeda, Angela Irwin, Armaan Jindal, Layla Knoll, Sasha Knoll, Maddie Perez, Addison Petitt, Emma Straub, and Kevin Ulis.
