Madison Police Officer Injured While Making Arrest

The officer was attempting to arrest a man when the injury happened.

MADISON, NJ — A Madison police officer was injured in the line of duty earlier this month, Madison police said in a statement.

Officers were responding to an assault at a Madison Street apartment on April 5 when the officer was injured. Officers were attempting to arrest Anthony Hernandez, 34 of Belleville, on assault charges outside of a second floor apartment.

Hernandez allegedly refused to cooperate and became belligerent, police said. Police said he became combative during the arrest process, injuring an officer's shoulder. The injured officer was not identified.

Following a struggle, Hernandez was taken into custody, police said. He was charged with resisting arrest, aggravated assault on an officer and obstructing the administration of law.

The officer was taken to Morristown Medical Center for treatment.
