Madison Student Newspaper Live Streams Walkout

After First cancelling their planned live stream "due to administrative intervention," the newspaper was allowed to live stream Wednesday.

MADISON, NJ — After first saying they were barred by administration from live streaming today's walkout, The Madison student newspaper the Madison Dodger Online provided a real-time look at the school's protest. You can watch it below.

The paper first said on Facebook Tuesday night they would not be live streaming "due to administrative intervention." Principal Greg Robertson told Patch he spoke with walkout organizer and newspaper writer Peri Munter early Wednesday morning and gave them permission to live stream.

"I could not be more proud of Peri for the way she organized and ran the demonstration. She is an exceptional young lady," Robertson told Patch.

The Madison Dodger Online was the only media allowed at the event. In a letter sent home to parents last week, principal Greg Robertson said no outside media agencies would be allowed to film or take photos, but that the school reserved the right to take their own pictures and videos and release them in accordance with the media policy.

The walkout will begin at 10 a.m., and lasted 17 minutes, one minute for every person killed in the Parkland, Florida school shooting.

The walkout was planned with the school's support and, as a safety measure, the school did not say in advance where it would be taking place (other county schools have chosen to hold their demonstrations inside). There was be a "strong police presence," Robertson said.
