The Montessori Children's Academy and International Day of Peace

In the hopes of shining the light of peace brighter within our community, students from The Montessori Children’s Academy in Chatham, Convent Station, and Short Hills celebrated the International Day of Peace on September 21st. Nearly 400 students ranging in age from 2 ½ – 12 joined together to sing “Light a Candle for Peace.” The celebration also included lessons promoting self-awareness and demonstrating how each of us can contribute to a harmonious world through even our simplest everyday words and actions. Everyone learned that we all have ‘lights of love’ within ourselves and that there are many ways we can make this light shine each and every day. Peace Education is a hallmark of Montessori Education. Dr. Maria Montessori herself was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize three times, and her educational philosophy holds that “establishing lasting peace is the work of education.” The Montessori Children’s Academy upholds her legacy by nurturing within our students the values of respect and responsibility, with peace at the core of their everyday educational experiences.
