New Plays Return to Madison, New Jersey in Free Reading Series This January

Free readings of new plays by some of the country's best playwrights are coming to Madison via Writers Theatre of New Jersey in January.

New plays return to Madison as Writers Theatre of New Jersey's annual Soundings Reading Series kicks off during the first two weeks of January at Fairleigh Dickinson University's Dreyfuss Theatre. The Soundings Reading Series brings some of the top playwrights in the country together with professional New York and New Jersey actors and directors to stage readings of brand new plays for local audiences. The goal of the series is to allow the playwrights to hear their work performed and to receive feedback from and ask questions of the reading attendees in order to continue to hone the plays.

Playwrights whose work has been developed at Writers Theatre have gone on to win national awards for those plays and have had them produced in New York and throughout the country and these readings are vital to the playwriting process. By participating in the discussion after each show, audience members get a chance to ask the playwright questions and to offer feedback that may be helpful in the work of perfecting the piece.

When you go to Broadway to watch a play or to the movies to catch the latest blockbuster, you don't get any input into the process; the piece is already finished and all you can do is decide whether or not you enjoyed it. What Writers Theatre offers audiences with this series is a chance to become a part of the artistic process as they help to shape these play. In a world where pure consumption has become the norm, it is refreshing to be welcomed with open arms into a forum where your voice is appreciated and your opinion matters. It's an experience few people have had but many would enjoy.
