Saxophonist Michael Hashim to Open NJ Jazz Society Social Season in Madison

The Village Voice has called alto and soprano saxophonist Michael Hashim "a saxophonist with a melodic flair and a respect for past conventions." Hashim will open the New Jersey Jazz Society's social season with a tribute to Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn on Sunday, September 22, from 3-5:30 p.m., at Shanghai Jazz in Madison.

Hashim regularly plays in a trio led by he stride pianist Judy Carmichael. In a review of a Carmichael Trio performance in 2006, The Buffalo News' Garaud MacTaggart described Hashim as "a crafty and inventive instrumentalist." He has also performed with blues legend Muddy Waters, saxophonist Benny Carter and drummer Jo Jones, among others. According to allmusic.com, Hashim "continues to attract attention and admiration for his warm-toned, dynamic and always inventive playing."

Admission to the jazz social is free to NJJS members; $10 for non-members. There is also a $10 food/drink minimum. Shanghai Jazz is located at 24 Main St. in Madison. For more information, call 1-800-303-6557 or email info@njjs.org.
