Super Pee Wee Dodgers Lose At Denville

By Steve McKenna

Madisons’ Super Pee Wee Dodgers slogged their way to a dismal Denvilles’ Veterans Field Friday night in hopes of earning their first victory. Despite their best effort in less than harsh conditions, the Dodgers came up short against the praiseworthy play of the Blue Angels,31-6.

Denville took first possession and wasted no time, scoring their first TD on the second play from scrimmage for a quick 6-0 lead, the point after missed. Madisons offense, led by QB Robert Ferris, struggled early to purchase any noteworthy gains from Gabe Artiglere or Anthony Contessa, and after four downs gave it back to Denville with good field position. Again, two plays later, the Blue Angels entered the end zone easier than the Pope through the Gates of Heaven, and the rout was on.

Madison again had little advancement early in the second quarter and had yet to gain a first down against a stringent Denville defense, and once again after turning it back over on downs, Denville seized the opportunity and threw a pass to their open tight end, who scored to make it 19-0. A tremendous kickoff to Madison had them starting deep in their own territory on their 25 yard line, and again, a quick four downs gave the ball to Denville in fantastic field position. Another slant pass completion to their end who swept down the sideline ended the half 25-0.

Scotty Spelker had two nice gains to open Madisons’ second half possession, and Nick McKenna got the ball on fourth down and long, but was stopped short. Denville took over and Madisons’ Justin Slabaugh caused them to fumble, but to no avail since the Dodgers couldn’t capitalize, turning it back over to Denville. The Blue Angels then promptly trekked out to the end zone for their fifth and final touchdown, making it 31-0 late in the forth.

Madisons’ only highlight of the rainy, windswept battle was on their last possession, where a Ferris handoff to Jackson Conroy sent Conroy charging up the middle behind some stellar blocking that enshrouded him all the way to the end zone for their only score, denying Denville the shutout and ending it at 31-6.
