Madison Fire Chief Lou DeRosa was a member of the New Jersey Urban Search and Rescue task force based out of Lakehurst naval base when word of the attacks on America came on September 11, 2001. Members of the elite company, including DeRosa, were quickly deployed to the site of the World Trade Center, where they spent nine days digging through the smoking, smoldering mountain of debris known as "the pile" in a search for victims of the attack.
