MAHWAH, NJ — A developer has applied to build 60 units of market-rate and affordable housing on the site where the Mahwah Post Office used to be.
Toll Brothers plans to build around 48 market rate and 12 affordable units on Franklin Turnpike and East Ramapo Avenue.
The national development firm's application was heard at the last meeting on July 13 and continues this Monday at 7:30 p.m.
They have submitted a "Preliminary and Final Site Plan Application and a Soil Movement Permit Application with Proposed Soil Movement exceeding 1,000 cubic yards, for the construction of an inclusionary townhouse development consisting of 60 units, of which 20 percent will be designated as affordable," according to the meeting agenda.
The rents and income limits for affordable housing are usually set by the federal or regional government.
Some residents have said they would like to see retail space in the development, which is near the train station.
"No coffee shop for commuters, no stores, no gathering spot," complained one commenter. "Why can't the same 60 homes sit above shops and a plaza, the way our own master plan requires on every neighboring block? This is the only parcel in town that could ever give us a real downtown, and once it's built, that's it for a generation."
