College In Bergen County Locked Down After Report Of Gunman: Police

MAHWAH, NJ — Ramapo College in Mahwah was locked down on Thursday night due to a report of a gunman, police said.

Around 7 p.m., police posted on social media that the report appeared to be unfounded — but that the lockdown would continue until the investigation was completed.

Police said, "The Mahwah Police responded to Ramapo College on a report of a party with a weapon at approximately 6 p.m. tonight. The incident appears to be unfounded at this time."

They added, "The campus was placed on lockdown and remains that way while officers search multiple buildings on campus out of an abundance of caution."

The lockdown and unfounded report were the second in Bergen County that day. In the morning, according to police in Palisades Park, someone reported a gunman at an intersection near a school. Three schools were temporarily locked down. READ MORE: Report Of Gunman Locks Down 3 Bergen County Schools

After Mahwah police posted about the college lockdown on social media Thursday night, worried parents and relatives asked for updates.

"I have a kid sheltering in place alone and is naturally freaked out," wrote one commenter.

False reports have locked down schools in various North Jersey communities this year, with several in spring.
