According to police, the Ramapo College Public Safety department received a report that a woman had screamed "He has a gun," near the Berrie Center for Performing Arts.

Mahwah Police headed to campus and established a perimeter, said Captain Michael Blondin.

As police investigated, they talked to the original complainant, who told police that she did hear a woman yell "He has a gun." She said she didn't see anyone with a weapon, and left the area out of concern.

"While there were no additional reports of this armed individual, out of an abundance of caution, a decision was made to clear all of the buildings in the immediate area," Blondin said. "Tactical teams were deployed to do so. In addition, officers responded to several calls on campus to investigate suspicious circumstances stemming from the original call. Those too were unfounded."

At 8 p.m., after searches were complete, the lockdown was lifted.

Police said they believe there was no active threat, and the call was made with good intentions.

Mahwah police thanked the Ramsey and Upper Saddle River Police departments for their assistance.

Other Lockdown

The lockdown on Thursday was the second in Bergen County schools that day. In the morning, according to police in Palisades Park, someone reported a gunman at an intersection near a public school. Three schools were temporarily locked down. READ MORE: Report Of Gunman Locks Down 3 Bergen County Schools

That report was also determined to be unfounded.
