Barbara Streisand’s Sister To Sing On Mahwah Stage

Roslyn Kind talks childhood, her love of performing, and her plans for her Mahwah show

This Saturday, Mahwah will host renowned singer Roslyn Kind for the first time. In addition to credits that include over four decades of singing and recording, and performing in venues like Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall, Kind is the younger sister of legend Barbara Streisand.

“I guess you could say I grew up in somewhat of a musical household,” Kind told Patch of her upbringing. “Some lovely voices certainly came out of it. But, my mother wasn’t ever a stage mother.”

In fact, Kind considered becoming a teacher before settling on singing as a career. “In the end, performing won out. I really love what I do.” Kind began her career recording her first album the day after her high school graduation in 1968.

Kind said the best part of her shows, which she has put on across the globe, is communicating with her audience. “I really think that music is a way to just forget about your troubles for a little while. My goal as a performer is to spread joy and positive-ness.”

Her trip to the Berrie Center Saturday marks a long-awaited return to the East Coast, where Kind and Streisand were raised. “We grew up in Brooklyn, so I just returned there for a show at the Brooklyn Center for the performing Arts, and I am very excited for my first ever performance at .”

Kind said she finds college shows “fun. Whenever you are on the road, taking the show to the people, the audiences are wonderful. For people to see this show, they don’t have to travel to NYC, and people appreciate that.”

Kind said the show is appropriate for all ages. “I think the show is for everybody and anybody,” she said. "I like to make every venue feel like a small, intimate one so that I can connect with everyone in the crowd."
