Bergen County Woman Hit Child, Charged With Assault: Prosecutor

Jessica Mercer allegedly hit the child on the face, injuring her, county prosecutor said.

A Moonachie woman was charged with simple assault after she allegedly hit a child in the face, injuring her, said Acting Bergen County Prosecutor Gurbir S. Grewal.

Jessica Mercer, 37, was charged Wednesday after Moonachie police were told that she struck a young girl in the face, Grewal said.

Police contacted the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Special Victims Unit and a joint investigation determined that Mercer allegedly hit the girl in the face with her hand, injuring her, Grewal said.

In addition to assault, Mercer was charged with endangering the welfare of a child.

Bail was set at $25,000, she is to have no contact with the alleged victim, and cannot go to her residence. Mercer was remanded to the Bergen County Jail in lieu of bail.

Mercer is scheduled to appear in Moonachie Municipal Court March 16 at 5:30 p.m.
