Bergen Native Named Student Nurse of the Year

Katerina Korunovski, a senior at Ramapo College of New Jersey, received the honor from the March of Dimes.

MAHWAH, N.J. — A Ramapo College student received a national honor from the March of Dimes.

Katerina Korunovski, a Garfield native, was named the March of Dimes' student nurse of the year. Korunovski is a senior and is slated to graduate in May. She was the only student awardee in a field that included more than 200 nominees in various categories.

“I was so surprised when my name was called,” said Korunovski, who hopes to continue a nursing career in critical care. “Since I was a little girl, I never changed my career path. I always wanted to be a nurse. I didn’t think I would fit anywhere else.”

Korunovski has worked in operating rooms, the labor and delivery and mother/baby units, and in the emergency room at Hackensack University Medical Center.

“Each unit has its own dynamic but I love the excitement of the emergency room and trauma unit,” said Katerina. “That’s where I’d really love to be.”
