Bergen Woman's Body Ravaged By Lyme Disease

Mary Elizabeth Carter was recently diagnosed with 3 different strains of the disease.

BERGEN COUNTY, NJ — A local woman is fighting for her life after being infected with three strains of advanced Lyme Disease.

Mary Elizabeth Carter of Rutherford has more than $20,000 in medical bills battling the disease because health insurance will not cover most of the treatment.

"She has lost the majority of her muscle mass, often making it difficult to do things as simple as hold dishes or even stand," her friend Michele Santiago said on a GofFundMe page she launched to help Carter. "Her eye site is likely permanently damaged. The disease has attacked her brain, meaning her short and long-term memory suffers, as do her motor skills."
