Bon Secours Buys Mahwah Medical

Transaction marks the first Bon Secours private practice purchase in NJ; Dr. Leslie will remain physician at practice

Bon Secours Health System, the entity that owns and operates Good Samaritan Hospital in Suffern, NY, has purchased , formerly a private practice on Franklin Turnpike. The purchase, which went into effect this January, marks the first transaction of its kind for Bon Secours in the state.

According to Dr. Glenn Leslie, who opened Mahwah Medical in 1988, he “reached a point in my career where I didn’t want to run a practice anymore. When Bon Secours approached me, I realized I could sell it, but still maintain the practice. I was getting more and more overwhelmed with administrative tasks. Now, my responsibility begins and ends with patient care.”

Leslie said patients have seen no noticeable change since the sale went through. He is still the primary care physician at the practice, and all of his employees are still there, but now they are Bon Secours employees. “They were all grandfathered in and given credit in Bon Secours' system for all the time they worked for me,” Leslie said.

He said patients should not worry about losing him as a doctor as a result of the sale of his practice. “I am still the doctor here, and I plan to be for a good number of years,” he said.

For Bon Secours, which hosted an open house at Mahwah Medical earlier this month, the purchase was part of its new expansion initiative. “We look for premier practitioners, and [Dr. Leslie] certainly is one of them,” Deborah Marshall, a business development representative from Bon Secours, said. Bon Secours has purchased practices throughout the Hudson Valley and surrounding areas in NY, she said.

“It only makes sense for us to be in North Jersey, especially at a location that is so close to one of our cornerstone medical facilities, Good Samaritan Hospital,” she said. Bon Secours is looking to buy other private practices in NJ to add to its “network of physicians,” she said.

Leslie said Mahwah Medical’s new owner will bring some changes to the facility, but he said those should be positive additions, like opening for longer hours, replacing and updating machinery and equipment in the office, and adding a cardiologist and possibly another primary care physician to the practice.

“I think doing this actually prolonged my career,” Leslie said. “I was wrestling with too much on my plate, and now I feel like I’ll be able to do this for far longer.”
