Brush Fire Consumes 2 Acres Of Ramapo Reservation

The state Forest Service was brought in and dropped water on the fire, quickly extinguishing it.

MAHWAH, NJ — A brush fire consumed 2 acres of the Ramapo Reservation Monday afternoon.

Police received several calls about the fire at about 3:20 p.m. and police quickly responded to the scene with their all-terrain vehicle, said Mahwah Police Chief James Batelli.

The New Jersey State Forest Service dispatched personnel on the ground and called for a helicopter to drop water on the fire, which quickly extinguished it, Batelli said. The Mahwah Fire Department also assisted at the scene.

At its biggest, the fire was about 2 acres large. There were no reported injuries.

Police received reports that three girls were missing earlier that afternoon, but they were found just prior to the initial report of the fire, the chief said. Sgt. Timothy O'Hara brought the girls to their mother.

"Given the nice weather yesterday, there were undoubtedly many hikers in the Reservation during the time of the fire, but there were never any indication that anyone was trapped or could not navigate back down the trails," Batelli said.

Ramapo Reservation has a network of five trails, three of which include panoramic views of the immediate area.
