MAHWAH - The Mahwah Republican Club is accepting submissions for its 2026 Essay Scholarship.This year’s theme is “During the first year of President Donald Trump’s second term he deployed the National Guard to major cities to quell crime, targeted Venezuelan boats purportedly smuggling drugs, captured Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and, in a joint effort with Israel’s prime minister, killed Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.”
Using Article II of the U.S. Constitution as a resource, write a 1,000-word essay providing your opinion of whether or not these actions are constitutionally legal and under the purview of presidential authority.
The scholarship is offered to any high school senior who lives in Mahwah and who will attend college or a trade school post-graduation.Three awards will be given in the amounts of $1,000, $500 and $250.Essays must be typed and a minimum of 1,000 words. All opinions expressed must be the student’s own.Use of AI to write the essay is not permitted. Students of any political party affiliation may apply.Applicants must include the following information with their essay:name, address, email address, phone number, high school in which they are enrolled (or home schooled) and the college or trade school that they plan to attend.The deadline for submissions is May 31, 2026, and may be sent to mahwahgop@mahwahgop.com.Winners will be announced and presented with their award at the June meeting of the Mahwah Republican Club.
The Mahwah Republican Club strives to engage high school seniors in critical thinking about today’s political landscape. Over the years the Club has received inspirational and moving essays that demonstrate the concern Mahwah’s young adults have for topics that are relevant to democracy.
