HOLY SPIRIT BYZANTINE CATHOLIC CHURCH IN MAHWAH CELEBRATES CENTENNIAL ANNIVERSARY ON SEPTEMBER 19TH
Bishop Kurt Burnette of the Eparchy of Passaic to Lead Divine Liturgy Honoring 100 Years of Faith, Heritage, and Community Service
[Mahwah, NJ] — September 19, 2026 — Holy Spirit Byzantine Catholic Church is proud to announce its 100th anniversary, marking a century of spiritual life, cultural preservation, and dedicated community outreach. To commemorate this milestone, Most Reverend Kurt Burnette, Bishop of the Byzantine Catholic Eparchy of Passaic, will preside over a festive Hierarchical Divine Liturgy on September 19th.
The centennial celebration brings together current parishioners alongside the direct descendants of the parish's original founders and benefactors. This historic gathering honors the sacrifices of the early immigrant families who established the church a century ago while celebrating the vibrant parish community that continues their legacy today.
Understanding the Byzantine Catholic Tradition
For many, the term "Byzantine Catholic" is an invitation to explore a rich, ancient expression of the Christian faith. A Byzantine Catholic Church is a fully recognized Eastern Catholic Church in full communion with the Pope in Rome. It shares the same foundational beliefs, sacraments, and papal authority as the Western (Roman) Catholic Church. However, Byzantine Catholics retain the liturgical, spiritual, and theological traditions of the Christian East, rooted in the ancient Byzantine tradition of Constantinople.
Services are known as the Divine Liturgy (celebrated at Holy Spirit on Sunday at 9 am), and are similar to the Roman Catholic Mass, but feature ancient chant, rich symbolism, and incense. Unlike Western churches, the Divine Liturgy is traditionally sung entirely without musical instruments, creating a unique and prayerful environment.
A Century of Faith and Community Service
Since its founding 100 years ago, Holy Spirit Byzantine Catholic Church has been an active, steadfast anchor in the local community. Beyond serving as a spiritual home for generations of families, the parish has consistently supported regional charitable efforts, hosted cultural festivals, and opened its doors to neighbors of all backgrounds.
"Reaching 100 years is a testament to the enduring faith of our founders and the unwavering commitment of our current parish family," said Fr. Ihor Vorontvos. "We are honored to welcome Bishop Burnette and numerous other clergy to celebrate this remarkable milestone with us, and we look forward to serving our community for another hundred years."
