Ramapo Alum Gallery

“Chris Twomey: Time, Media, and Significance,” a one-person exhibition sampling works from the artist’s multifaceted career, opens in the Pascal Gallery in the Berrie Center on Wednesday, September 14 and continues on view through October 14. An opening reception will be held on September 14 from 5 to 7 p.m. with an artist’s talk at 6:30 p.m. There will be a book signing during the reception for the new 140-page monograph and memoir, “Chris Twomey PARALLAX: Time, Media, and Significance.”

Chris Twomey is a New York City artist inspired by themes of origin and identity, incorporating film, performance, installation, digital media and sound into her work. According to art critic Eleanor Heartney, she “uses her own life and experiences as springboards for meditations on the human condition and our cosmic and personal state of connectivity.” Her awards include a Ford Foundation grant, CAPS, the Kitchen Center, an Experimental TV grant, and an American Film Institute Directing internship. Recent solo exhibitions include “ASTRAL FLUFF: Carnal bodies in Celestial Orbit,” at Creon Gallery, New York City; and “Chris Twomey & Core Installation,” at Westbeth Gallery, also in Manhattan. Future exhibition venues include AC Institute, New York and a one-person exhibition at HP Garcia Gallery, New York. Twomey is represented in Detroit’s Museum of New Art, Rhizome, Artbase, and in numerous private collections. Her “Omni Series” using navel imagery was the subject of a CNN feature segment.

The Ramapo exhibition ranges from her early experiments with animation to a more recent conceptual installation. Twomey attended Reed College and received a bachelor’s of arts degree from Ramapo College in 1976, where she was known for her ground-breaking installation and performance works, several of which are documented in the current exhibition. She received her MFA from Pratt Institute. Her varied career endeavors included originating an art performance group called “Performance People” and working in film and network television.
