Father And Son Involved In Airmont Avenue Crash In Mahwah

Late-model Corvette crashed into a telephone pole, police said.

A father and son crashed into a telephone pole on Airmont Avenue Thursday morning, Mahwah Police said.

Police responded to the “serious” accident shortly before 9:30 a.m. Thursday on Airmont Avenue, about three-quarters of a mile from the Rockland County border. Police found that a late-model Corvette had crashed into a telephone pole on the east side of the road, Chief James Batelli said.

Mahwah Rescue 1 responded to the scene and extricated the passenger, Meir David Berger, 23 of Monsey, New York; the driver, Richard Berger, 52, the passenger’s father, was trapped in the car for 45 minutes, Batelli said. Members of the Mahwah Ambulance Corps and Valley Hospital paramedics helped get him out of the car, Batelli said.

The elder Berger was not injured, police said, and the injuries to his son are not believed to be life-threatening, Batelli said.

For reasons authorities do not know, the driver lost control of the Corvette, crossed over the double yellow center line, and crashed into the utility pole, Batelli said.

The Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Fatal Accident Investigation Unit and the Bergen County Sheriff’s Department also assisted with the investigation at the scene. Mahwah Police Officer Keith Iorio was the initial investigating officer at the scene.
