It's Official: Town Hall Will Honor Late Mayor

Municipal Building renamed in former mayor's honor

The town council has made it official - the municipal building will be renamed for the late Mayor Richard Martel, who .

Martel was mayor of Mahwah for three terms beginning in 1997, and was also a distinguished figure in town, serving in various capacities in town from the Zoning Board of Adjustment, to Planning Board, to Mahwah Youth Sports, and Township Counil President. 

On July 28, the council honored the late mayor by dedicating the Municipal Building in his name. It will now be called the Richard J. Martel Municipal Bulding.

Martel's son was in attendance at the meeting and drew a large applause from the crowd and the council once the announcement was made.

"Thank you for your father's service," Town Council President John Roth told the Martel family.

Mayor John DaPuzzo, who was after Martel's death and has expressed great sorrow at the loss of the mayor, said "He was a great guy and a good friend and mentor. He never thought about what was in it for him. He did a great job."

A date for the specific name change of the building has not been announced.
