DID YOU KNOW?
Poet patriot Joyce Kilmer enlisted in the Army only days after America entered World War I in April, 1917. En route to France with fellow troops in October, 1917, he boosted morale by writing a battle poem, “When the Sixty-ninth Comes Back.” The poem ended with the line: “New York will be seen one Irish green when the Sixty-ninth comes back.” Kilmer himself did not return. He was killed in action on July 30, 1918.
