DID YOU KNOW?
The date of poet patriot Joyce Kilmer’s death in World War I has never been exactly established. His death certificate gives the date as August 1, 1918, and the Army’s telegram to his widow reporting he was killed in action also states August 1, 1918. But the date popularly accepted is July 28, 1918 – the day his regiment staged a great advance in France, wrote his biographer, Robert Cortes Holliday. Still another date, July 30, 1918, was printed on his Citation for Valor.
