The Mahwah Ice Hockey Association is giving the community an opportunity to test out skating and playing - no strings attached.
“Have you ever wanted to try hockey, but wasn’t sure it was for you?” the association’s flyer asks kids and families in Mahwah.

According to the MIHA’s website, teams in town are open to boys and girls of any age, and are typically “broken down according to age level designated by birth year. The Youth levels are 8 & under (Mites), 10 & under (Squirts), 12 & under (Pee Wee), 14 & under (Bantam). Then the child enters High School they can play for our JV or Varsity team.”
The site encourages kids to get involved in the sport, both for the athletic gains it provides, and the lessons it teaches.
“Ice Hockey provides a unique opportunity to play and interact with a team, set goals, build respect toward other teammates, opposing players, coaches and parents. They will also respect themselves and their bodies.”
The association, a non-profit organization, describes its two-fold mission as promoting ice hockey knowledge and skills for younger players, and providing financial support to the Mahwah High School’s JV and Varsity teams.
The free classes this week are a fulfillment of the former.
