Mahwah Artist's Work To Be Featured At Javits Center

Release from the NYC exhibit

Mahwah-based artist Myra Kooy will exhibit her work at the American Craft Show NYC at the Javits Center November 18-20.

Over the past two years she has focused on fine art: wood assemblage wall hangings and vintage door paintings. Kooy is environmentally conscious and her use of repurposed and found objects reinforces this. Her art merges the natural world with human emotions represented in assemblage sculpture, paintings and wearable art.  Everyday encounters are interwoven with a personal search for the spirit of roots and the universal truths uncovered through the work.

She was raised on a small farm in Mahwah and would transform everyday objects into playthings in her imagination. These experiences gave her the confidence to work independently and to develop as an artist. Kooy closely identifies with the Wodaabe people, a nomadic group found on the margins of the Sahara Desert in modern day Niger. The Wodaabe people are known for incorporating odds and ends such as suitcase locks and key chains into their traditional festive regalia.
