Mahwah Crash Between Car And Motorcycle Leads To Charges For Florida Man

A crash in Mahwah on Sunday between a car and a motorcycle left one man with serious injuries and sent the other to jail in Bergen County.

MAHWAH, NJ — A 67-year-old Florida man has been charged with assault by auto and driving while intoxicated after allegedly changing lanes and hitting a motorcyclist with his car on Sunday, prosecutors said.

Terence J. Cotter of Delray Beach, Fla. was charged with several offenses, said the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office.

Prosecutors said that on Sunday, June 2, the Mahwah Police Department responded to a 911 call reporting a motor vehicle accident on East Crescent Avenue involving a car and a motorcycle.

An investigation conducted by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Fatal Accident Investigation Unit and the Mahwah Police Department determined that a 2022 Volkswagen, operated by Cotter, was traveling south on East Crescent and crossed into the northbound lane and collided with a motorcycle, prosecutors said.

The motorcyclist suffered serious injuries, prosecutors said.

Cotter was suspected of being under the influence of alcohol at the time of the collision, prosecutors said.

He was charged with driving while intoxicated, assault by auto, and related motor vehicle offenses, prosecutors said.

He was taken to the Bergen County Jail located in Hackensack to await a detention hearing.
